The Metaverse: It is Real and it is Not Just for Games
EM-01

Cloudonix
The term metaverse was coined nearly 30 years ago by author Neal Stephenson in Snow Crash. In stories like this or Ready Player One, the hero finds a better life for himself in a virtual reality world. McKinsey suggests a market value of $5tn by 2030, while fellow management consultancy firm Gartner predicts a quarter of the world's population will spend at least one hour a day in the metaverse by 2026. But it is not just for games. Today companies are using it to sell, provide customer care, and even remote work. This means it is not just a toy, but serious business. This session will offer a brief introduction to what the metaverse is, and will show some of the current players and use cases, with a bit of a look at what could be.

Are You Really Getting the Most from Your Technology to Support Today’s Workforce?
E-02
National Channel Manager
Peerless Network
The workforce and workplace have changed. Part of it’s because technology has evolved; part of it is due to changes in employee needs and preferences; and of course, the pace of change was driven largely by necessity starting in 2020. But the fact is, what worked 3 years ago, doesn’t necessarily work today. Businesses need the tools and solutions to support their workforce models and, in many cases, those models may still be evolving. Your solutions need to be flexible enough to allow you to adapt to changing needs, and they need to deliver a comprehensive set of tools so workers can be productive anywhere. They also need to be easy enough to use and manage to avoid undue technical challenges – for both users and IT teams. This panel will discuss what the real needs of today’s workforce are, and how companies can effectively implement tools and technologies to support the needs of their different workers – after all, different roles require different tools. The key in understanding those needs and then finding the right solutions to meet them.

These needs have always been important, but never more so than now, as businesses become more decentralized, and the preference for home-based working increases. Coming out of the pandemic, a full-on return to the office remains unlikely, and IT must recognize how this amplifies the risks around both data security and privacy. While many such risks are well-known, a distributed workforce creates more points of entry for newer threats, not just from work-based exposure, but from personal online activities as well. Vendors have responded with more sophisticated solutions to both mitigate data security risk for the business as well as protect the personal privacy of your employees. By attending this session, IT leaders will come away with a better understanding of what’s needed to address these needs, both of which are critical to the success of hybrid work.

The Future of Work will be transformative in many ways, and IT must adapt to keep pace. As businesses evolve from analog to digital technologies, IT has needed to shift from managing hardware to software, but also now to cloud-based architectures. This is far-removed from legacy environments, and with the emergence of hybrid work, cloud has become increasingly critical to support distributed operations. IT is under constant pressure to do more with less, and this doesn’t leave much room to stay on top of what’s needed with Future of Work. Digital transformation and AI are giving rise to new streams of data that networks that IT will need to manage, and this won’t be possible without a good plan. This is one of two panel sessions focused on helping IT leaders develop effective strategies in this new era, and the focus here will be on data networks, with a particular emphasis on SD WAN.

Reimagining Business and Entrepreneurship: Moving into the Metaverse
EM-05
The metaverse is not built fully yet and at the early stages of development and conceptualization. We are truly at the beginning. The metaverse creates an opportunity to be innovative in our approach to business and focus on the experiences we create for our customers and clients. It is the time for us to start preparing to incorporate the elements that are appropriate for our business. Education is key to knowing how to navigate the digital space safely and effectively. This session will provide a look at the future of business and the digital and workplace transformation. We will explore opportunities for implementing blockchain technology, digital assets (i.e. NFTs, cryptocurrencies), and technology-related innovation (e.g. Web 3.0) into our business. Additionally, we will discuss the future of work and how that impacts our business and our team’s work. However, we cannot talk about the future of business without addressing cybersecurity and how this could impact our business as we move into the metaverse. To close out the session and discussion, we will focus on developing a strategy to ultimately create experiences for our customers and clients driven by this technology.

Today, many supply chains are strained and lack the transparency needed to track materials as they travel from suppliers to producers and on to customers. This journey requires ongoing data integration from multiple sources, often resulting in inconsistencies. Without a single “source of truth” there are inevitable trust and verification issues. Blockchain technology solves these problems by providing all stakeholders with access to immutable, transparent, data in real time. This session will showcase active case studies from businesses leveraging blockchain to improve visibility and accountability within their supply chains. For example, Boeing, uses blockchain to track and trace F/A-18 wing parts with one integrated system; and TOKs, a fast-casual restaurant chain with over 200 locations across Mexico, removed 9 intermediaries from its coffee supply chain and increased farmers’ wages by over 600%.

Inclusivity in the Metaverse
EM-06
One goal of the Metaverse is to replicate the feeling of real-world connection by creating immersive virtual environments. This provides a unique opportunity to involve participation in society by leveraging virtual technology. However, as we have transitioned to the information age and a digital economy, we have witnessed how pre-existing inequalities and barriers present in the material world can further combine with digital inequalities, further disenfranchising and magnifying the inequalities of those who already face the greatest adversity. Web 1 & 2 products and services have largely been designed around people who are already most able to participate. So much so that we have created inaccessibility and inequality because there hasn’t been enough done to anticipate the attitudinal, financial, social, enablement, or policy barriers that marginalised groups face. This session will deliver frameworks, models and perspectives that should be considered throughout the development of Metaverse and Web 3 in the pursuit of a kinder, ethical, more inclusive, digitally-enabled future.

As businesses become more customer-centric, the hybrid work model must extend beyond the office to the contact center. Supporting your customers is just as important as supporting your workers, and to do both well, agents must be part of the equation. Just as a good employee experience translates into better collaboration outcomes, the same holds for a good agent experience leading to a good customer experience. Contact center agents are now working from home as often as office workers, so they are very much a part of the Future of Work story. Contact center agents need a strong supporting cast to be effective, and with so many now working remotely, the hybrid work model presents some big challenges. To better understand those challenges and how to approach them, you’ll want to attend this session.

How Municipalities Like Miami, Denver, and Utah City Are Embracing Blockchain and Cryptocurrency
BC-11
Cities across the country are starting to explore how blockchain technology and cryptocurrency can help them become more efficient, transparent, and secure. Miami, Denver, and Utah City have all implemented pilot programs that use distributed ledger technology for a variety of services. For example, Miami has partnered with BitPay to allow residents to pay taxes with Bitcoin, while Denver is using blockchain technology to store public records such as birth certificates and marriage licenses. Utah City has also implemented blockchain technology for its voting system, allowing citizens to cast their votes securely online. Blockchain and cryptocurrency are providing new opportunities for municipalities to improve services in areas such as taxation, record keeping, and voting. By leveraging the power of these technologies, cities can ensure that their services remain secure and efficient for years to come. From tokenizing municipal debt to using blockchain for identity management and voting systems, these cities are showing the potential of DLT in public service applications. The Great Resignation reflected a re-assessment of priorities for many workers in 2022, and with that, a new social contract is emerging as part of the Future of Work landscape. Both workers and management have had to re-think their relationship with one another, and for 2023, there’s a new attitude on both ends of the spectrum. With today’s tighter economy, workers are more likely to hold on to their jobs, but that doesn’t mean they’re all-in with your company. These dynamics are new, and for the hybrid model to succeed, you need to understand what’ going on. If “quiet quitting” and “quiet firing” are new terms for you, this session will be a must, as it’s defining the latest chapter for how the workplace is evolving.

The change of how we work is real and it’s here to stay. The future of work is virtual or hybrid. To truly align with the needs of the modern businesses, we must give them the proper tools to operate in this new reality. Remote teams and organizations need to communicate and collaborate in an engaged and efficient manner. And this is where the metaverse comes in. The immersive experiences ensure engagement among all meeting participants. One cannot nod off or get distracted during a meeting where they’re walking, speaking, gesturing, and interacting with others. Indeed, when people are active, they are much more engaged. Additionally, the 3D environment allows for all necessary information to be brought into the same ‘room’ via integrations and APIs, thus boosting employees’ efficiency and productivity during meetings. We’re just starting building the various Metaverse apps. There are still many unknowns. What we do know, though, is that the Metaverse is inevitable. The younger, digitally-born generations are sure to embrace it. Indeed, data from the Work Trend Index 2022 (a study of 31,000 people in 31 countries) showed that: - Half of Millennials and Gen Z envision doing work in the Metaverse in the next 2 years. - 52% of employees are open to using digital immersive spaces in the metaverse for meetings or team activities in the next year. - 47% of employees are open to representing themselves as an avatar in meetings in the next year. Meetings in the Metaverse are engaged, efficient, and much more fun. A great time to be innovating in this space!

Without an engaged workforce, no amount of technology will help your business adapt to the Future of Work. The right technology is essential, however, especially to help workers manage the vast volumes of data coming from a dizzying variety of digital sources. Otherwise, they will be overwhelmed, and won’t have the tools to convert information into knowledge. This is where AI holds great promise, not just to make workflows easier, but to help employees work smarter. While AI is getting better on this front, workers must feel a sense of agency and being valued for their humanity. Too much focus on automation and efficiency will lead to disengagement, and undermine the benefit of investing in new technology. There is a difficult balance to strike here, but it’s critical for Future of Work, and this session is where we’ll find that balance.

Lessons Learned in IT Automation
E-10
Automation is one of the latest industry buzzwords—and it’s a necessary step for most digital transformation efforts. But, how do you make the shift from manual to automated? Maybe nobody knows where their data is coming from. Maybe processes are in place for compliance, but nobody knows if those processes are still necessary. Or maybe there’s pushback from employees who are worried that they’ll become redundant. Yet, automation not only has the potential to accelerate digital transformation efforts, but to help organizations deal with the IT skills shortage—so your skilled workers can spend more time on more important (and more interesting) tasks. This session details how one IT team was successfully able to automate IT processes and improve operations and employee satsifaction.

Why NFTs Aren’t Working Like They Should

NFTs, as they are being used today, lack flexibility and don’s fit the gaming industry at all. Yet, that is a market ripe with opportunity and an audience that is ready to adopt NFTs – if they are implemented more effectively. To adapt it and make it more suitable for gaming, NFT technology should expand its functions. First, simple collateral-free NFT rent would help with the mass adoption of Web3 Gaming. Second, building dynamic NFTs that can upgrade when a player levels up in a game would make them more attractive to users. Third, the combination and dividing of items will give gaming NFTs more liquidity. In addition, decentralized NFT metadata storage would make the whole industry more secure for users. Last, but not least, these lessons can lead to a more mature NFT market, not only in gaming, but in other industries as well.

This session provides a detailed look into how to effectively build cyber awareness, how businesses can improve their overall awareness, and how providers and partners can drive that education with their customers. Technology is a key driver for Future of Work, and AI may be the most important type. AI is transforming all types of work, and that includes what goes on in the contact center. Agents need all the help they can get as today’s digitally-savvy customers have new expectations that legacy-based contact centers cannot meet. Adopting cloud-based platforms is the starting point for contact centers, and the next step is deploying AI-based technologies. Customer service automation may provide a strong rationale for AI, but the real payoff comes from its capabilities to capture and process massive amounts of data coming from the various digital interactions you have with your customers. Contact centers are quickly learning that this is the best way to get on a level playing field with customers, and to do so while providing personalized service. Motivosity
Managers and our teams have the biggest influence on employee engagement. So what are you doing to transform your managers into leaders throughout your organization? How are you developing your management style to take care of each employee on your team or within your organization? Don’t listen to us, listen to Ted Lasso. Whether you are as obsessed with Ted Lasso as we are or not, this session will make a difference. The Harvard Business Review said that organizations with low employee engagement scores experienced 18% lower productivity, 16% lower profitability, 37% lower job growth, and 65% lower share price over time. On the other hand, businesses with highly engaged employees enjoyed 100% more job applications. In this session, we’ll discuss principles that can take you from a manager to a mentor to a leader to create a highly engaged team.

Hybrid work is a cornerstone of Future of Work, and with most teams being decentralized, collaboration efforts must not be location-dependent. With today’s cloud platforms – namely UCaaS – employees can work just as effectively from home as in the office. Businesses that remain tied to premises-based tools will be challenged to support the hybrid model, especially when it comes to working in teams. This challenge will only intensify if more of your workers elect to prefer working from home, in which case there will be more urgency for cloud adoption. Not only is this the best way to provide a consistent collaboration experience regardless of where workers are based, but this capability will make them feel more connected to the rest of the organization. Keeping workers productive is important, but so is the need to build culture and a sense of belonging that keeps morale strong. In this session, you’ll hear from leading collaboration providers and how their technologies are helping make hybrid work.

Energy as a Service: The Next Big Opportunty for Service Providers
SP-13
Even before energy costs skyrocketed during the past year, consumption was creating challenges. Everything needs to be bigger and faster – and that requires more energy. Service providers have some options as the look to the energy future. Many are already investing in renewable energy sources, which not only provides a more cost-effective source for their own energy needs and reduce grid usage. At the same time, they can store energy and sell that to operators they partner with to support growing demands on the power grid. This session looks at new opportunities for service providers in the energy sector to not only support their own power consumption needs, but monetize their investments in energy technology and supporting utility and other customers’ needs.

As with any investment, cryptocurrency carries its share of risk – and, inevitably, lawsuits. Over the past several years, many notable crypto promoters have faced lawsuits due to alleged fraud, deceit, or malpractice of some form. It’s not surprising, given the lack of maturity of the crypto market and its volatility. But, it brings up questions when businesses or individuals are looking to invest, or to raise capital. This session looks at the scope of litigation in the crypto space, what it means to the industry, and what lessons have been learned about investing and raising capital to avoid issues that can derail your operations.

Demonstrations will include how threat actors conduct OSINT (Open Source Intelligence), Ransomware case studies and examples, defense evasion tactics and more. On the defensive side, attendees will learn how to leverage SSE/SASE as well as MITRE ATT&CK to create multiple choke points to detect, mitigate and prevent these threats. And, because we cannot ignore the advancements in AI, the discussion will include a demo of how AI tools can be used by both threat actors and defenders. How Large Language Models Are Turning Call Recordings Into Gold
AC-06
AI is exploding in 2022. OpenAI's release of Instruct-GPT in January ushered in a new era of AI, which understands natural language, human dialog and code equally well, and can perform tasks across all three mediums through natural language instruction. This turns large piles of unstructured data, such as call recordings, into natural-language mineable databases to answer questions like: - What's my call resolution rate? - What can my CSRs do better? - Action item tracking - Detailed transaction tracking - Caller intent - Call summarization ...and much, much more. This talk will walk through the high-level capabilities, demonstrate the functionality, and provide an overview of an architecture which could perform this analysis at scale.

Contact centers have lagged in adopting the cloud, but now they can’t migrate fast enough. While all businesses are on some form of a Future of Work journey, few have gone through a total re-think like contact centers have been trying to do. Many businesses have made becoming customer-centric a strategic priority, and this entails a clean slate approach, both inside the contact center and across the entire organization. That process usually starts with the contact center, and aside from investing in digital technologies to improve customer experience, a similar effort is needed to improve agent experience. Change is never easy, but it can be done, and this session examines what contact centers are doing right, and how these efforts can serve as a FOW template for their broader organizations to follow.

The secure access service edge (SASE) market is sizzling hot in terms of activity and potential revenue growth. According to Dell’Oro Group, the SASE-related technologies market will exceed $13 billion by 2026. But until now the widespread availability of SASE managed services and overall growth of the SASE services market have been hamstrung by multiple challenges, chief among them customer education and the lack of industry standards. While most of the discussion of SASE has centered around specific technology components, a SASE services standard focuses on the subscriber experience irrespective of how the service is implemented. SASE combines security functions and connectivity services with subscriber policies to meet a higher level of performance and assurance required by modern enterprises. A SASE service enables secure access and secure connectivity for subscriber users, devices, and applications to targeted resources (applications or devices). This access is independent of the location of users, devices, and applications and is authorized according to subscriber policies. Attendees to this session will learn about the importance of building a foundation of SASE services aligned to standards, and next logical steps for SASE: automating the ordering of SASE services via business APIs followed by operational APIs that will enable enterprises to dynamically adjust or track the performance of their SASE services.

Whereas the use cases for Part 1 are episodic in nature, the metaverse represents a continuous state of being. Nobody is ready to inhabit the metaverse full-time, but as gamers know, these virtual worlds feel more real the more time you spend in them. This is a different kind of brave new world, and while clear use cases haven’t yet emerged for hybrid work, it’s really just a matter of time. Our Part 1 session focuses internally on IT’s primary need – to manage the data network. This is a key Future of Work need, but IT supports more than just technology. Workers are the end users of those technologies, and with hybrid work, IT has never had to support such a broad range of needs and endpoints for them. Not only is there a wide range of endpoints to support – PCs, tablets, desk phones, smart phones, video hardware, headsets, etc. – but also network environments. Creating a consistent user experience across all of this requires careful orchestration, and with home-based workers providing most of their own endpoints, this can become a difficult challenge. For ease of management, IT might be considering a virtual desktop, so many types of approaches are possible. Every situation is different, but this will be the session where you’ll learn best practices from IT leaders.

Energy Management: Making Your Network More Efficient
SP-17
Energy demand continues to grow – a natural byproduct of digital transformation. At the same time, energy costs are through the roof. Telecom is a critical part of today’s digital infrastructure, enabling the bigger, faster, more powerful technologies that drive business today. Naturally, then, they also contribute significantly to global energy consumption. The question is, are their networks as efficient as they can – or need to be? This session looks at network energy consumption and, more importantly, ways network operators can become more energy efficient. What infrastructure improvements can they make? Can they become more efficient by leveraging data and analytics to better understand and manage their consumption, manage their energy demands, and become more environmentally friendly while reducing costs at the same time. When networks become greener, everyone wins.

Closing the Encryption Gap in the Era of DeFi
BC-21
Despite the advanced security built into secure Multi-Party Computation (MPC), blockchain and other technologies to support digital finance, assets and wallets, there is a fundamental gap that can expose cryptographic private keys and put systems and resources at considerable risk. This encryption gap widely exists but is usually not discussed or even understood, and the immutability and separation utilized by MPC can be undermined if the encryption gap is not addressed. This session will discuss the existing gap, how it is exploited and how it can be effectively closed.

AI Journey: From Documents to Insights
E-18
AI Program Manager

AI has become a critical part of daily operations in many companies. Understanding the business needs and criteria with existing paths of AI is the key to success. There are many documents in organizations – like PDFs, images, logs, etc. – that can provide valuable insight into businesses and their customers. But, most of these documents are just sitting there, untapped, because they are difficult to read, compare and understand the relationship between them. This session explains how a document AI pipeline can help transform unstructured documents into structured data with the power to read, understand, and make them useful. The technology unlocks the values of documents and offers a competitive advantage to re-invest and repurpose these resources for any business.

Kyndryl
Future of Work is very much about using the right technologies to support employees from wherever they are working, but another important component is the workspace itself. As the nature of work evolves, so do the spaces where work gets done, and this is happening in a big way as businesses try to entice workers back to the office. Today’s technology has made work from home very manageable, and many see no reason to become office-based again. This has led business leaders to re-imagine the workspaces they’ve been using for so long, focusing more on specific use cases than just being a generic place where everyone simply goes out of habit. There’s a great opportunity here to show employees that you’re thinking carefully about the Future of Work, and in this session, you’ll learn what some of that new thinking looks like.
