Industry Perspective: Is SD-WAN Ready for Global Deployments?
SDW-15
Sr Director, Product Management
Aryaka
Not all SD-WANs can deliver global application performance and reliability, while reducing complexity and costs for IT. Global enterprises that use edge-based SD-WANs are forced to go over the Internet for most cloud- and SaaS-based applications, often experiencing lost productivity and poor end user experience due to slow application performance. This session focuses on the criteria enterprises should consider when evaluating SD-WANs to support global expansion and cloud/SaaS migration initiatives.

Robocalls: A New Threat To Successful Business Communication
HT-01
CEO
YouMail, Inc
As telecommunication costs come down and various platforms and tools for making phone calls become more ubiquitous, problems with abuses of those technologies are becoming more prevalent. In particular, robocalls have become a massive societal problem, to the tune of nearly 30 billion a year in the US alone – despite being in a heavily regulated area, and having significant effort in developing technology to stem the tide. This trend has mostly impacted consumers, but is starting to impact business more and more, starting with sole proprietors but hitting small and medium size business and enterprise as well. This session will discuss various approaches to addressing the problem and to discuss what the robocall epidemic predicts for other emerging communication technologies.

A significant benefit of SD-WAN is acquiring information on what applications are running on your network, how much bandwidth they are consuming, and how well they are performing. With traditional networks, most IT teams were literally flying blind and were unable to measure or guarantee the performance of their applications, nor could they identify rouge applications that shouldn’t even be on their networks. At the same time IT is being pressured to roll out new apps to support employees and the customer experience. This knowledge is powerful, but even more powerful is the ability to make real-time changes to your business and security policies.

Human error is the leading factor in data center downtime. As evidenced by British Air’s recent data center outage, brand reputation is easily – and often irrevocably – damaged by even short amounts of downtime. Since secure and reliable IT performance is critical to brand reputation and management, it’s essential for businesses to engage a data center partner that guarantees above-average uptime rates. Implementing best practices and disciplines can reduce the potential for human errors that directly impact reputation management, TCO, giving customers higher uptime and reliability. This session will discuss leading indicators that every company should consider when choosing a data center, including compliance and security protocols, support and maintenance, continuity planning, reliability, monitoring and reporting transparency.

By “Automation” Do You Mean Excel?

In recent years, technology has introduced several buzzwords including wireless, the cloud, IoT and most recently, automation, into everyday conversations. These all can relate to the larger goal of increasing productivity in the workplace, but it can be easy to get caught up in the hype of these words without understanding what they truly mean and the impact they could have on your team. For many, automation is a fancy way of describing a formula in an excel spreadsheet. While this functionality is useful, it does not address the larger problem faced by employees: Although most employees find the integration of technology into the modern workforce has drastically impacted what the typical day looks like and the variety of responsibilities expected, many still find it difficult to focus on what they were hired to do. This session will deliver an understanding of how to identify the top areas within your business to implement automation; a working knowledge of how to establish these clearly defined goals within your organization to build an ongoing stream of productivity that directly contributes to your company’s main objectives; and define what automation is and what its role should be in this modern workplace.

Rise of Collaborative Communications
BCE-07
VP of Product Management, Collaboration Products

The rise of millennials in today’s workforce has forever changed how work gets done. The preference toward messaging-based communication is heavily outpacing the work styles to which knowledge workers have traditionally been accustomed. But, it isn’t just the millennials who are to blame. Messaging wouldn’t be dominating the workplace if it weren’t for the “anytime, anywhere” reality mobile devices have made possible. As much as a phone call is useful in communicating a thought, we are in an age where content-sharing reigns supreme, which is what these team messaging and collaboration environments enable – but users and management alike want all their communications to be delivered in a single, unified experience, not through siloed architectures. What does this experience look like in today’s modern enterprise? How can enterprises keep pace with innovation while maintaining scale and growth? This session will discuss the rise of collaborative communications and the sense of empowerment dictating today’s modern workplace behaviors. Attendees will learn about the shift away from traditional collaboration modalities, and how the emergence of messaging is forging a new era of unified experiences.

Meeting the Needs of the “Mobile Native” Generation

Senior Director of Solutions Marketing

Our changing work/life patterns have created new challenges, including juggling multiple communications personas on one device, dealing with multiple disparate over-the-top (OTT) apps and figuring out how to provide great customer service from an all-mobile team. The small-to-medium business marketplace offers significant opportunities for mobile service innovation. Over 90% of global businesses employ fewer than 10 employees. These smaller businesses might have only one physical location, but often have workers who are mobile, connecting from home, “on the road” or at a client’s office. These mobile workers struggle to communicate effectively as a team, both with colleagues and with customers, and invariably end up using their personal number/identity in their day to day business lives. Meanwhile, in larger businesses, there are also small teams that want to enhance communication and collaboration between team members from their mobile devices. Analyzing the results of a recent and proprietary survey of more than 400 individuals and businesses, this session will explore the extent to which business and personal communications have become intermingled, and the demand for network-based voice and messaging services, multiple personas, group communications and collaboration features that can truly serve the mobile native generation.

Each year, someone declares, “This is really the year of enterprise video.” The truth is, video is not new to business communications, but it also has not exploded the way some have expected it to. There are many reasons for that, not the least of which is a lack of understanding of how to effectively leverage video communications. That said, there are many organizations – large and small – that rely heavily on video to enhance their internal and external communications experiences. And, it can be done in many ways, depending on your resources and needs. This session will discuss not only why video can dramatically increase your communications effectiveness, but how to implement it in a way that is appealing to your users and will positively impact their business activities.

As service providers and enterprises deploy SD-WAN, it is essential that they have an assurance solution that effectively monitors the health of virtual services in a disaggregated, virtual environment. That includes the need for an assurance solution that can support hybrid networks to identify and troubleshoot issues across a virtual and dynamic service infrastructure and be able to correlate those issues back to the impacted customers and services – before they impact network and infrastructure performance and business operations.

The widespread growth of cybersecurity threats over the past several years has led to a focus on investment in emerging technologies that help anticipate and detect these threats. Businesses now are spending more budget on cybersecurity than ever before; however, threat landscape continues to evolve, requiring companies to constantly need to adapt their defenses. IT departments must have a good understanding of what assets are most important to the business and then what protections make the most sense. One solution businesses should consider? Predictive analytics tools, which help stitch together various events and detect anomalous behavior humans couldn’t, filling in gaps in network protections.

You don’t need a crystal ball to imagine the cloud’s long-term impact on the enterprise market. The current shift is already revealing glimpses into how the cloud is fundamentally disrupting the landscape for both enterprises and service providers. From small shops on Main Street to large multinational corporations around the globe, businesses of all sizes increasingly choose cloud over traditional on-site solutions. Now, even large companies can move with the speed and nimbleness of a startup. In turn, those with only a handful of employees can access advanced communications and collaboration tools once beyond their reach. Just as important, they can consume those communications services on their own terms via subscription, capital purchase or a mix of both. The cloud is also having a profound impact on how enterprises deliver truly exceptional experiences to their customers and how service providers facilitate the success of their enterprise cloud customers. In today’s world, outshining the competition requires more than offering a great product or service; customer experience is the real differentiator. Find out what the shift to cloud means for your organization, what deployment model matches your needs, and learn how you can leverage the cloud to gain a competitive advantage.

In a world of increased connectivity and rapid response, call centers need to reinvent themselves with every technology iteration. The introduction of AI's, bots and natural speech technology aims to increase service level and reduce customer churn. But still, the call center representative will always become the weakest link. Contextual communications bridge the gap between the sometimes "clueless"/"mindless" call center representative and the consumer, lowering the friction bar and improving overall customer satisfaction. This talk will introduce the basics of contextual communications, how they can be integrated to an existing solution and a small case study of a 3000 seat call center, utilizing contextual communications.

Networks are business enablers, and IT managers are under increasing pressure to deliver better and more efficient networks and faster and better connectivity for access to network resources. In fact, the network has become, perhaps, the most critical business asset today. While interest in and adoption of SD-WAN is increasing rapidly, it is not meant to completely uproot the networking ecosystem. Rather, is can be used to support existing technologies to create better solutions. The question is not necessarily whether to replace existing network infrastructure with SD-WAN, but how to build a hybrid network that will enhance your networks without a complete rebuild.

The Washington, D.C. Department of For-Hire Vehicles (DFHV) is distinguishing itself as the first department of its kind to open its APIs to third party developers – a move that is democratizing the rideshare experience in our Nation’s Capital. The world of open APIs eliminates barriers, fosters collaboration, promotes innovations, utilizes customer insights, and streamlines operations. By applying this strategy, the DFHV has fostered an adaptive approach in which citizen developers are taking the lead to convert taxis to a digital infrastructure. This move aids all residents and visitors of the DC area by allowing more accessible, safer, and affordable rideshare experiences. Developers living in metropolitan areas throughout the United States can leverage open APIs, and the data they expose, and benefit as well, unlocking the value in taxis and all for-hire vehicles in their city. This session will discuss the benefits of incorporating an open API strategy as well as the technology framework that’s needed to make this a reality in every city.

Making Technology the Heart of Successful Teams

On average today’s business workers connect to and use five to ten communications applications each day. This siloed communications structure inherently wasteful and results in hours of unproductive time, whether that’s due to looking up information, connecting to services, repeating communications and context with different constituencies using different channels, or collating information from multiple sources into a single context. The result is inefficient operations and lower productivity. This session will show how to eliminate siloed communications and leverage technology to create more productive – and happier – teams, whether team members work side-by-side in the office, in various remote locations, or in mobile capacities. With modern technology, siloed communications are a thing of the past.

Should my Interconnected VoIP Company Become a Private Telecommunications Carrier
SP-11
Managing Partner
Marashlian & Donahue, PLLC, The CommLaw Group
Whether knowingly or not, the vast majority of UCaaS/Cloud Communications companies operate as “Interconnected VoIP” service providers (I-VoIP), per the regulatory definition established by the FCC circa 2005, in its Vonage Order. The FCC regulates I-VoIP differently than traditional telecoms. For the most part, the differences have favored I-VoIP companies, helping them to compete with incumbent carriers. Nevertheless, a significant legal classification available to traditional telecommunications competitors remains out of reach for the I-VoIP industry. That’s because a carrier whose service offering meets the definition of “Interconnected VoIP” cannot offer their services on a private carriage basis, or take advantage of certain de-regulatory benefits associated with private carriage. I-VoIP providers are also subject to more regulatory burdens and compliance fees at the State Utility Commission level than private carriers/private service providers, which largely go unregulated in the vast majority of the states. This session will highlight the issues, opportunities and benefits, as well as the risks associated with transforming your I-VoIP company into a Private Telecommunications Carrier, in whole or in part.

The pains of outdated businesses processes are becoming increasingly apparent. The U.S. healthcare system suffers from $800M in administrative expenses per year due to inefficient coordination of benefits (COB) processes (source: CAQH). In the financial sector, one global bank loses $5M-10M per year due to slow/ineffective client onboarding, while another loses 5% of its overall deals to the same issue (source: Forrester). The US government received more than 700,000 FOIA requests in FY2015. With each request requiring approximately $1,200 and 30 hours to process (source: Armedia), that amounts to $856 million and 21 million hours. So how do these enterprises evamp their processes and get with the times? Simple answer: digital transformation. Digital transformation means different things to different people in various industries. Forrester advisor to CIOs, Dan Bieler, captured the reality of digital transformation, one of the reigning buzzwords today: “Digital transformation investments are ultimately about business survival through disruption.” To become disruptors, more and more businesses are turning to business process management (BPM) as a framework to achieve digital transformation. But it’s not about just digitizing documents or building out some and calling it a day. Digital transformation is a journey that never ends, because competitive threats, regulatory changes, market conditions, and the emergence of new enterprise technologies will also never end. The most critical way to address never-ending digital disruption – what is being called Digital Transformation 2.0 – is through automation. This panel will discuss how automation can be the linchpin for digital transformation and how automation helps businesses grow into modern, customer-centric organizations.

Cloud and IoT device trends are presenting serious challenges to enterprise IT departments as they work to protect branch and remote offices against security threats. Increasing utilization of cloud services is leading to higher bandwidth requirements, and Internet-connected mobile devices are changing how users and devices interact with corporate infrastructure at branch and remote networks. The traditional notion of security perimeters no longer applies to enterprise mobility and this change is negatively impacting IT’s ability to enforce policies and deliver consistent Quality of Service. This session will explore how SD-WAN and other emerging technologies can comprehensively incorporate policy management to enable simpler deployment, configuration, and troubleshooting for branch and remote networks. Attendees will leave the session with a broader understanding of the new security threats that are emanating from the branch as well as the solutions that they can put in place today to combat these threats.

The communications industry has been talking about SDN, NFV, Cloud, Virtualization – collectively, the software telco – for some time. With a few exceptions, most operators seem to be struggling to achieve expected results. There are many reasons, both technical and non-technical. This panel will discuss how to put virtualization, automation and DevOps in place and use the tools like SDN, NFV, and cloud to achieve Digital Transformation. What are the roadblocks? To what extend have they been overcome? What other requirements must be addressed to shorten the transformation timeframe for providers so they may enjoy the benefits of digitalization and software-centricity?

Are you willing to take the next step inside the Open Source communications? Using Asterisk with Voice application is great, however there is an increasing demand for Messaging applications and Omni Channel capabilities. How to manage Asterisk environment mixing together voice, messaging, socials and IoT applications will be the main focus of this presentation. We are going to analyse how the Asterisk users can manage multiple kind of interactions, according to their skills. The concept of Open Channel API will be introduced: a simple but effective way to add new channels inside an Asterisk contact center environment, from Social media to IoT events which need to be managed according to some Queueing mechanism or automatic Workflows. Real demos will be played during the session, in order to see when such concepts work and when they break! Emphasis will be given as much as possible to free concepts, some of them even under Beta developments - in order to share the vision with the Open Source community - providing ideas and collecting as many feedbacks as we can from the attendees.

The Value of Bringing Cloud Management to Real-Time Communication Endpoints
SP-16

Next gen provisioning and management platforms will require the presentation of a service API for managing deployments of soft clients, phones and ATAs. A REST-style API, which is hosted in a public or private cloud (or both), can complement a user or agent portal, by providing a programmatic interface intended for server-to-server interaction. Via the API, a service provider can remotely monitor general endpoint status, update configurations, and probe devices in real time for quality assurance. Secondarily, the API also exposes organizational resources such that the service provider can go to market in a variety of ways – via agents, wholesale, managed service VARs or direct to the business or residential consumer. Cloud management provides a valuable, direct link to endpoints, and complements existing device management features of hosted or premise based communications systems and integration with the PBX, particularly when offering cloud-hosted solutions.

Voneto
Exceeding the capacities of widely-used Asterisk management UIs can result in a painful experience. Designed for typical SMB deployments, their performance under large-scale conditions can be challenging and has numerous practical limitations... This case study explores a large College campus environment and Voneto's deployment of Asterisk with a management framework based on Asterisk realtime. We'll discuss development, customer-requested modifications, and rollout experience. As this was also a large deployment of Digium handsets, we'll explore the rollout experience and also discuss a number of custom phone and directory apps designed to enhance the end-user experience. Whether a first-time user of Digium handsets or contemplating a deployment that exceeds the capabilities of traditional Asterisk Uis, we'll have something for you.

More than 23 billion text messages are sent every day globally. It’s a trend that’s been growing for several years and, despite the multitude of other messaging channels available, remains the most consistent and broadly utilized globally. It’s also the most user-friendly of all communications applications. All of this makes it ideal for business communications. As always, there are challenges, most notably, the lack of interoperability between traditional text messaging, OTT apps, and business communications platforms. This session will discuss why messaging should be a key component of business communications – whether that’s internal communications or customer-focused – and how it can be integrated into communications strategy as a secure, connected channel.

Today’s service provider marketplace is complex, growing more convoluted every day. While the subscription model is still alive and well, with many providers finding great success offering subscription-based services. It’s iTunes vs. Spotify. And, the massive number of new services being introduced is making a consumption model revival very viable. This isn’t the old pay for what you use, but comes with a new structure, new provisioning and billing complexities, and unprecedented pressure on service delivery. Which model will win? That’s unclear. Which model makes more sense for you? That’s what this session will help you understand.
