Sonian CTO to Speak at ITEXPO

It's less than a week until ITEXPO 2017 kicks off at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The schedule of events is looking jam packed. One new addition recently emerged as Sonian noted that its chief technology officer (CTO)—who also happens to be its founder—Greg Arnette will be delivering an address at the event, offering some exciting new insight for ITEXPO attendees.

Arnette's address is set to focus on the changing role of the chief information officer (CIO), and how said figure can provide data insights to add further value to the business. Given that software as a service (SaaS) solutions are on the rise—and increasingly being put to use in companies, that means a lot more data moving through the company. That data in turn can be used to drive big data operations, derive actionable insight and means more value for the company overall.

In fact, this same phenomenon is also changing the CIO's role; SaaS options are available for more arms of the business, which means individual departments are making some of their own choices in IT and leaving the actual IT department out of the loop. CIOs, therefore, are being forced into more of a maintenance role these days, and that's making some CIOs obsolete. Rather than become a pricey line-item on a budget easily removed, Arnette notes, CIOs can shift their role into one of data handling rather than providing the tools to handle data.

Sonian is particularly well-suited to such a move; as one of the biggest names in cloud-based archiving, its bread and butter is handling data. With this in mind, it's easy to see why Arnette's leading such a session; even the title explains why. The session's title: “From CIO to CDO: How to Drive Innovation and Value with Data.”

It might be a bit too much for the CIO to presume to change his role in the organization in such a fashion—the rest of the C-Suite might have a problem with that—but it's likewise clear that several roles formerly the province of IT just aren't really that necessary any more. Even security, a common IT role, is being branched off into its own department to reflect how vital it is. So for the CIO to start looking into becoming the chief data officer (CDO) instead might be a worthwhile translation. Big data is increasingly useful for companies and it requires a clear source of fodder with which to work, so for the CIO to head up that operation may be useful.

Regardless of the stance here, Sonian's CTO will be delivering impressive insight at ITEXPO, and that will be just part of the flood of such insight poised to emerge from this major event.
