Spam calls with spoofed caller IDs have reached unprecedented levels, to the point where people simply refuse to answer calls. They are easily the biggest segment of consumer complaints to the FTC and the number of robocalls on a monthly and annual basis continues to climb. Reports suggest as many as 4/7 billion robocalls were placed in July in the United States. While the TCPA theoretically should protect against spoofed robocalls, technology has evolved in a way legislators simply could not project almost three decades ago. So, if technology is the problem, it should also be the solution. Enter STIR (Secure Telephone Identity Revisited) and SHAKEN (Signature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKENs) standards. This session will discuss the spoofed robocall epidemic, who bears responsibility for protecting subscribers, and how can modern technology help eliminate this growing problem and hopefully make it possible to actually know who is calling again.

When people hear terms like CALEA, wiretapping, subpoena compliance and such, they tend to fall back on several misconceived notions about these topics. The truth is that CALEA is saving lives, and the providers that are complying with subpoenas are playing very real roles in saving lives as well. This session will use several real case studies from well-known law enforcement cases, to discuss how Subpoena and CALEA compliance makes a real difference.

As there is with every generation of wireless technology, the rollout of 5G has come with its share of marketing spend and media hype. Is the hype real or is 5G just an incremental evolution in mobile technology that most people won’t really realize happened other than seeing another number on their mobile screens? More importantly, where’s the revenue in 5G? Aside from mobile device manufacturers charging more for 5G-capabile devices long before their networks are live in most places, how are service providers going to leverage 5G? Is the opportunity with consumer or business customers, and what will the revenue-producing use cases be? Does it even rally matter? Will the 6G hype cycle begin before most people have even experienced 5G, creating an endless unrealized hype cycle
