During a consulting engagement, David was tasked with developing a solution to play an audio file simultaneously to both parties on a call with a single key press. While this may seem like a pretty basic requirement, anyone who has attempted it knows the numerous challenges that stand in the way!
Join this session to discover the different approaches David tried, the reasons why they didn't (or couldn't) work, and how he ultimately devised a solution that not only delivered on the client's needs, but also wowed them.

Alex discusses the use of Asterisk as a call receiver in their automated test suite for the next generation of their high-performance routing platform. Alex will share technical insights to help others adopt a similar approach. The chosen testing methodology heavily emphasized end-to-end tests, as the interaction of components is vital for customer satisfaction and highlights areas prone to common breakage.
Although Asterisk is not used internally, it was chosen for its ability to provide back detailed SIP attributes to the test runner. Despite some challenges due to its high-level abstraction, and consistent across versions, showcasing its versatility in telephony systems. While Asterisk may not seem like the best choice for this task—being a high-level telephony engine that abstracts channel technology into broad call concepts in the dial plan—it has proven reliable, with tools that can achieve this goal, even if they are somewhat obscure.
In the end, Asterisk impressed with its capacity and stability for these workloads, as well as its consistent performance across versions. This highlights Asterisk's versatility as a building block for all kinds of telephony systems.
